The North Wind and the Sun

Source: fable after Aesop (public domain). The well-known German version used in phonetics is not free; the German text here is Claude's own simple retelling, and the English sentences translate it.

Literal: PL = ma, QUOTE = re, NEAR = hi, MORE = ro, THAN = te, ALSO = mo. Compounds with hyphens.

The North Wind and the Sun had a quarrel. Each one said: “I am stronger than you.” A man in a thick, warm coat was walking along the path. The Sun said: “Whoever takes the man's coat off him is stronger.” The North Wind agreed and began to blow. He blew long and cold. But the man only held his coat tighter. In the end the North Wind gave up. Then the Sun shone bright and warm. The man grew hot, and he took off his coat. The North Wind said: “You are stronger.”

Sentence by sentence (9 sentences)

wind north and sun speak-fight in time FAR

Der Nordwind und die Sonne hatten Streit.

The North Wind and the Sun had a quarrel.

Notes (3)
  • The first sentence sets the time with di lusa da; after that there is no time word.
  • wind = pada (a root of its own since). “North wind” is two words (noun + noun: wind of the north).
  • quarrel = speak + fight (senamege).

all PL it speak QUOTE I MORE strong-be THAN you

Jeder sagte: „Ich bin stärker als du.“

Each one said: “I am stronger than you.”

Auf dem Weg ging ein Mann mit einem dicken, warmen Mantel.

A man in a thick, warm coat was walking along the path.

Notes (2)
  • “In a coat” here means “wearing a coat”. ga (together with) does not fit, so a relative clause with “have”.
  • coat = clothing + warm (fegarida, clothing that keeps you warm;). The adjective ridi after it stresses that this coat is warm.

sun speak QUOTE person who take clothing-warm from person-male MORE strong-be

Die Sonne sagte: „Wer dem Mann den Mantel abnimmt, ist stärker.“

The Sun said: “Whoever takes the man's coat off him is stronger.”

Notes (1)
  • “Whoever …, is …” = person + relative clause; the relative clause ends at the next verb (nake).

wind north want ALSO, and it begin going

Der Nordwind war einverstanden und begann zu blasen.

The North Wind agreed and began to blow.

Notes (2)
  • “To agree” = to want it too.
  • “To blow”: the wind already is “moving air”; its blowing is therefore nuba (going, movement).

it go cold-ly through time long. but person-male hold MORE strong-ly clothing-warm

Er blies lange und kalt. Doch der Mann hielt den Mantel nur fester.

He blew long and cold. But the man only held his coat tighter.

Notes (1)

Am Ende hörte der Nordwind auf. Dann schien die Sonne hell und warm.

person-male become much warmth, and he take-off clothing-warm

Dem Mann wurde heiß, und er zog den Mantel aus.

The man grew hot, and he took off his coat.

Notes (2)
  • “Grow hot” = become + much warmth (action + noun, no chain of verbs).
  • “Take off” = vuvepe (vu- + put on).
